HAND AND WRIST
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome:
Symptoms: Pain and numbness in the palm of the hand and
the wrist are the hallmark symptoms. The syndrome usually starts
insidiously and may be associated with repetitive use of the extremity.
Resting the extremity and night pain is another finding. Physical exam
findings along with a electrical conduction study will confirm the diagnosis.
Treatment: A splinting protocol is the mainstay of conservative
treatment. Steroid injections may be efficacious for some patients.

Surgical release of the transverse carpal ligament has a high degree of cure.
Tendonitis:
Diagnosis: Tendonitis of the hand and wrist describes a constellation of conditions that
can cause pain and lack of mobility for the patient. One of the most common
tendonopathies is De Quervain's tenosynovitis. This syndrome makes simple lifting
and motion of the wrist painful. Steroid injections, stretching, medications,
and splinting make up the conservative treatment options. Surgical release of
the affected tendon sheath is an effective option.
Trigger Finger:
Diagnosis: Tenosynovitis of the flexor tendons of the hand is the cause of this condition.
Thickening and swelling of the digital flexors and the thumb flexor are the
cause of "popping", locking, and pain in the palm of the hand. Relieve can be
obtained with splinting, injections, and medications. Refractory cases can be
cured with a simple surgical release.
