Minimally Invasive Surgery:
MIS is a technique as well as a change in thinking that is changing
the way total joint replacement is being performed. We are employing new
instruments and techniques that allow us to do the same surgery that we were
performing in the past but with less tissue injury. The new philosophy and
approach to joint replacement allows for less soft tissue mobilization and leads
to a smaller scar. The goal is to allow for faster rehabilitation and recovery.
Computer Assisted Surgery:
Computer Assisted Surgery is a new and exciting technique of performing surgery with
more precision. This technique employs a computer generated infrared field to
surround the surgical field. This field is employed in the same way that global
positioning works. It determined the accurate placement of the extremity in space
and also works with the instrument to make more accurate and more reproducible
results.
This technique is particularly valuable in patients that have had
previous surgery and or deformity that causes alterations in normal landmarks.
It is helpful in determining accurate leg lengths in hip replacement surgery.
In combination with minimally invasive surgery the patients can expect more
reproducible results with a shorter recovery time.
